The International Conference on diagnostics of structures and components using the metal magnetic memory method was held on May 19-20, 2016, in Budapest, Hungary. It was initiated by the Hungarian Association for Non-destructive Testing (MAROVISZ, Budapest) and Energodiagnostika Co. Ltd. (Moscow, Russia) and cosponsored by the European Federation for Non-Destructive Testing (EFNDT). The conference organization was supported by the Russian Society for Non-Destructive Testing and Technical Diagnostics (RSNDTTD), the Russian Welding Society (RWS), the Hungarian Welding Association (MAHEG) and the Hungarian Association for Material Testing (MAE).

Experts from Argentina, Czech Republic, India, Indonesia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Mongolia, Oman, Poland, Russia and Slovakia took part in the conference.

Reports on the following topics were presented at the conference:

  • Physical bases of the metal magnetic memory (MMM) method. Experimental research of the physical and mechanical properties of metal using the MMM method.
  • Magnetoelastic, magnetomechanical effects and domain structures.
  • Non-contact magnetometric diagnostics of buried pipelines based on the MMM method.
  • Equipment and structures' stress-strain state assessment.
  • Machine-building products quality control by structural inhomogeneity and residual stresses.
  • Experience of the MMM method application during the inspection and lifetime assessment of pipelines, structures and components.
  • Criteria of metal's limiting state in residual life assessment.
  • MMM method application in the fitness for services procedures and in the asset management system.
  • Personnel training in the MMM method and in the field of stress-strain state testing and engineering diagnostics.
  • Totals of the MMM method development in Europe, Russia and other countries.

20 reports of scientists and practicians were presented in total. In particular, the following persons were among the speakers of plenary session:

  • Dr. Peter Trampus - Professor, President EFNDT, Hungary
  • Dr. Anatoly Dubov - Professor; General Director of Energodiagnostika Co Ltd., Russia
  • Dr. Gerd Dobmann - Professor, Senior Scientific Consultant, Germany
  • Dr. Gabor Vertesy - Professor, Centre for Energy Research, Hungarian Academy of Sciences

After all presentations there were intensive discussions.

In connection with expansion of the number of countries where the MMM based NDT technology was spread (about 35 countries as of May 2016) and the increasing demand for personnel training and certification, it is proposed to include the program for experts training in the MMM method in the document ISO/TR 25107.

The general opinion of participants was the need for further practical implementation of the MMM method as an effective method of early metal and welded joints diagnostics of vessels, pipelines and other equipment for various industrial applications, continuation of theoretical and experimental studies to improve the method and control criteria. The participants from the countries - Argentina, Czech Republic, India, Indonesia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Mongolia, Oman, Poland, Russia and Slovakia suggested to include the MMM method in the list of NDT methods, under which certification of experts is performed in accordance with the International Standard ISO 9712, and to organize an international specialist group on the MMM method within the International Committee for NDT (ICNDT).

It was proposed to send this resolution to both ICNDT and ISO TC-135.
