The Conference "Diagnostics of Equipment and Structures Using the Metal Magnetic Memory" was held on February 14-16, 2007, in Moscow. It was held on the initiative of Energodiagnostika Co. Ltd. The Conference was supported by the Russian Society for Non-Destructive Testing and Technical Diagnostics (RSNDTTD), the Russian Welding Society (RWS), the Scientific-Industrial Union "Risks management, industrial safety, control and monitoring" (SIU "RISCOM"), Technical Committee TC-132 of RF Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology.

More than 100 specialists from various cities and town of Russia and other countries: Argentina, Poland, Hungary, the Ukraine, Byelorussia, Kazakhstan, Lithuania and Latvia, participated in the work of the Conference.

Papers on the following topics were presented at the Conference:

  • Totals of the metal magnetic memory (MMM) method development and implementation on Russia and other countries (as of December 2006 the MMM method has spread in 25 countries of the world).
  • The experience of the metal magnetic memory method application at inspection and life assessment of gas and oil pipelines, power engineering, petrochemistry, railway transport and other industries equipment.
  • Criteria of metal limiting state at residual life assessment. Stress-strained state inspection of equipment and structures.
  • Quality inspection of machine-building products by structural inhomogeneity and residual stresses.
  • Non-invasive magnetometric diagnostics of buried gas and oil pipelines.
  • New Russian and International Standards in the field of engineering diagnostics. RWS experience in the sphere of standardization through the International Institute of Welding.
  • Personnel training in the field of stress-strained state (SSS) inspection and engineering diagnostics.

The main attention was paid to the practical experience of the MMM method application in various industries and on various objects. In particular, reports were presented about the MMM method application at diagnostics of hoisting devices, equipment, vessels and pipelines in power engineering, gas industry, petrochemistry, shafts, machine-building of Russia, Ukraine, Poland, China, Lithuania and Latvia. Problems of specialists preparation and training, methodical and normative-technical support, method standardization and inspection instruments certification were covered as well. A wide spectrum of practical results of works carried out using the MMM method was presented in the form of poster reports and information materials. Exhibition of modern inspection instruments was organized within the framework of the Conference.

Special attention was paid to the experience of NDT methods standardization and their harmonization with international ones, particularly through the International Institute of Welding (IIW). This problem is becoming more relevant in connection with Russia's joining the WTO. International ISO Standards on the metal magnetic memory method were presented at the Conference.

Totally 40 reports by scientists and practitioners were listened to at the Conference. In particular, the speakers' list included: RWS President, dr.tech.sc., professor of the Russian State Gubkin University of Oil and Gas O.I. Steklov; Head of Metals Expertise Department of TSNIIPSK named after Melnikov, professor V.M. Goritsky; professor V.M. Matunin (Moscow Energy Institute); professor of the Institute of Mines Yan Hankus (Poland); director of "Resurs" company (Poland) A. Radishevsky; general director of Energodiagnostika Co. Ltd., professor A.A. Dubov.

The report by V.T. Vlasov and A.A. Dubov covered physical criteria of structures materials' and elements' stress-strained state assessment. A new book "Physical theory of the strain-failure process" (by V.T. Vlasov and A.A. Dubov) was presented. At present a large arsenal of methods and means for materials' SSS diagnostics has been accumulated in Russia and other countries. However there are no standard specimens, programs and centers for specialists straining in non-destructive testing of equipment and structures’ SSS. Currently the theoretical basis is insufficiently developed for objective comparison of SSS inspection methods effectiveness and determination of boundary conditions and scope of their application. A uniform theoretical basis developed based on modern scientific achievements in the field of fracture mechanics, material engineering, solid-state physics may become a basis for resolution of contradictions occurring nowadays at practical implementation of various methods and means of materials' SSS inspection.

The participants expressed a common opinion and desire to realize further practical implementation of the MMM method as an effective method of metal and welded joints early diagnostics of vessels, pipelines and other various-purpose industrial equipment, to continue theoretical and experimental investigations in order to improve the method and inspection criteria. The Resolution of the Conference participants stresses the necessity to include the metal magnetic memory method as a separate NDT type in the list of Rostechregulation and Rostechnadzor normative documents.
